Improvised music is rooted in ongoing innovation, music theory, exploring personal expression through sound and, perhaps most crucially, the intention that the music should authentically mirror the here and now. The here and now of the musicians creating it, the place where its produced, and perhaps most importantly, the very moment of its production. "Mow" is a perfect example of all of this.
Albert Cirera and Florian Stoffner have been playing together since 2017, and this is their second album. "Mow" was recorded in Zurich, mixed in Buenos Aires, and edited in Barcelona. It's a child of the present times.
What you can hear on this album is not a duet in the sense of two distinct musicians, varying in instrument, origin, age, etc., who come together to play. Instead, you can hear a unique musical entity that the two musicians co-create simultaneously. They can be confused for one another; such is their fantastic understanding on all levels.
In this music, there are no forms, just sonic processes that unfold before our ears and that possess their own internal logic. The logic that takes us from one sonic state to another transcends the musicians' decisions. It's beyond us, somewhat autonomous and unavoidable. The musicians simply follow its course.
In order to reach this point, the musicians need impeccable technique, genuine deep listening, shared principals, and an absolute surrender to the moment, which is what Albert Cirera and Florian Stoffner offer us. This is the manner in which they create a range of moments—some intense, others more subtle —all equally captivating and intriguing.
Because this is the recording of a live set, it is short but full of nuances; it is alive every millisecond. I recommend listening to it two or three times for more thorough absorption. The first time, it might catch you by surprise, but by the second or third time, you'll fully appreciate the richness it offers, not to be overlooked.
Bon Appétit!
